Yesterday (Thursday, 4/15/2010) the AuctionServices.com Zimbra email servers downloaded the latest antivirus signatures from the antivirus vendor for installation in our email antivirus scanner that runs on both of our internal redundant email servers. Unfortunately, the newest antivirus database signatures do not work and the antivirus email scanner system was inadvertently rendered inoperable although our monitoring systems reported the service as up and running. This caused an unintentional interruption in the flow of email through our email queues.
As the antivirus signatures are provided by a third party, we are anxiously waiting to hear from them as to when a fix for this will be available. In the meantime, we restored email service without antivirus scanning in place. This will allow for email delivery, and we are in the process of delivering the backlog of messages that are currently sitting in our email queues. Any customers still using the Zimbra email system who have not yet been migrated to the new Google Apps system will need to ensure they have an up-to-date antivirus protection system installed on their local workstation to protect against malicious email messages.
If you do not have an antivirus package installed on your workstation, there are a number of free and paid solutions available. If you are in immediate need of a free Windows antivirus solution, please try Microsoft Security Essentials or PC Tools Antivirus.
We are continuing to troubleshoot the inline antivirus scanner on our email server(s) and will update this message once we hear back from our antivirus vendor with the cause of the corrupt virus signature database.
Best regards,
